Mr. Varela's Class

General Education

I am so excited to be your child's teacher this year!  Each school year I enter it excited about what changes and improvements I can make, what drastic overhaul will propel my students learning forward. For the start of this year, that overhaul is not of my own choosing. How fortunate, how lucky I am to have challenges placed before me that I can rise above and overcome. To quote T.S. Eliot, “If you aren’t in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?” Alternatively, there’s this beautiful sentence from Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, “Per aspera ad astra, Papa,’ I whispered. Through hardship to the stars.” Now onto some important information.

Hopefully, you have all received this email from me. If you have received it but another parent or guardian has not then let me know as I may have typed their information incorrectly when building the contact list. Please check in with your family friends whose child is in this class to confirm with them as well. Thank you. There will be four methods of communication with you and your student.

  1. Email— All significant items that parents MUST be aware of will be shared via email.

  2. Schoology— This will primarily be for students but I am hoping we’ll be able to set up parent portals as well. If not, I encourage you to log in once a week so you are aware of what your child is working on.

  3. Zoom/Google Meet— Again, this will primarily be with students unless you have questions or concerns you feel would benefit from a face-to-face conversation.

  4. Google Chat— Google Chat is a messenger app like Whatsapp or Facebook Messenger. The students will already have access through the district so I will be able to create spaces for them to converse with myself and their peers. For parents, you will need to create a Google account if you wish to utilize Google Chat for simpler, less formal conversation. Remember, anything of significance will be shared via email so Google Chat is not required. You can reach me on the program at if you want to help me test it out!
