Happy March!
Kindergarten
Kindergarten is finishing up Unit 4: Life in my Community. In this unit, students have been learning how to communicate about their own community, and different kinds of communities around the world. This month we will also begin Unit 5: Health and Wellness. Students will begin to develop the vocabulary and academic language to engage in discussions around healthy habits and advocate for their own wellness. To practice at home, help your student practice words to describe common symptoms such as: hurt, nauseous, earache, burn, toothache, stomachache, cough, sore throat, itchy, runny nose, and sore throat.
1st and 2nd grade
1st and 2nd graders are finishing Unit 4: The Language of Retell and Recount. We have been reading and retelling stories about families from different cultures, and telling stories about our own cultural identities. In Unit 5: The Language of cause and effect, we will ask and answer questions about the impact that humans have on the environment, and how our actions can help the earth. To practice at home, ask your child to describe one thing they can do every day to help the earth, and what effect that will have.
3rd and 4th grade
3rd and 4th graders recently finished Unit 4: The language of recounting and summarizing. We read stories to practice recounting key details of stories and determining the central message while focusing on how culture can shape our identity. Students also shared their own stories about their families, and engaged in meaningful discussions about diversity and acceptance. In Unit 5: The language of cause and effect, we will learn about the reasons for climate change, and it’s effect on people’s lives around the world. To practice at home, help your child use if/then statements to describe the relationship between pollution and climate change.
