During the month of January our multilingual students will be focusing on the following:
Kindergarten and 1st grade students will be using the Key Language of: Inform to highlight language to provide information. As students convey information, they define, describe, compare, contrast, organize, categorize, or classify concepts, ideas or phenomena.
By the end of the unit, students will classify and describe types of music and instruments from around the world.
Throughout the unit, students will participate in the teaching and learning cycle for the functional approach to language (build background knowledge, supported reading, deconstruct text, joint construction of a text, collaborative construction of a text with peers and independent construction of a text.) The TLC cycle emphasizes guidance through interaction in the context of shared experiences.
Music and instruments from around the world are used to build background knowledge so that students can give information on music and instruments in different cultures and countries.
Second grade students will be using the Key Language of: Explain through the language of Social Studies to answer how culture can be observed in celebrations around the world.
By the end of the unit, students will be able to apply the targeted functions and selected features within the context of the compelling question.
Throughout the unit, students will participate in the teaching and learning cycle for the functional approach to language (build background knowledge, supported reading, deconstruct text, joint construction of a text, collaborative construction of a text with peers and independent construction of a text.) The TLC cycle emphasizes guidance through interaction in the context of shared experiences.
Dia de los Muertos, Powwos. Holi, and Lunar New Year are used as context for academic language learning.
Third grade students will be writing an opinion essay along with stating their opinion orally with a peer related to technology. Students will write an introduction that clearly states their opinion along with supporting reasons to engage the reader.
Students will share and reflect on their writing experience with peers and continue to grow as a writer.
Fourth grade students will brainstorm and develop topic ideas for an opinion essay related to science or technology. Students will state an opinion, support the opinion with reasons, support reasons with facts and details, and provide a concluding statement.
Fifth grade students will be involved in the study of the language of asking and answering questions to say or write something to someone as a way of gaining information and to request an answer to a question related to Social Studies.
Describe why and how relationships and patterns exist between events, ideas, processes, problems.
To express similarities and/or differences between two or more objects, actions, events, or ideas. To do this well, students should first describe attributes of objects, actions, events, or ideas and then compare/contrast.
