Happy May!
Kindergarten
Kindergarteners are currently working on Unit 7: The World Around Us. In this unit, students learn and apply the vocabulary and academic language needed to communicate about our world, environmental issues and what people can do to have a positive impact on the Earth. Students have been practicing using language to sequence the positive and negative actions that affect our environment, including recycling and littering. We will also be using maps and pictures to summarize information about different types of landforms in the United States, and the countries that our families are from. To practice at home, ask your child what we should do to help the environment, and to explain their reasoning using the word because.
1st and 2nd grade
This spring, 1st and 2nd graders have been working on Unit 6: The language on interpreting and drawing conclusions. Students are practicing vocabulary to interpret information from word problems and bar graphs, and learning that information can be interpreted in various ways in order to construct meaning. To practice at home, ask your child to explain their opinion on a topic using the coordinating conjunctions for, and, so, but, and, or to link their thoughts together.
3rd and 4th grade
3rd and 4th grade recently finished Unit 5: The Language of Cause and Effect. In this unit, students used the language of cause and effect to identify and describe the reasons for climate change, the effects it has, and what humans can do to have a positive impact on the environment. In Unit 6: The language on interpreting and drawing conclusions, students use the language of interpreting and drawing conclusions to determine the meaning of information and to note important details in order to make judgments. Students will learn how to state information based on an interpretation of visual information, and structure their reasoning orally and in writing. To practice at home, ask your student to explain the reasoning for their opinion on a topic, by providing evidence to support their claim.
