Multilingual Learners

As the 2023-2024 school year wraps up, I would like to share that I will not be returning to Coyote Ridge next year, and that our wonderful Kindergarten teacher, Deena Pries, will be taking over the ELD position. I am making the decision to be closer to my daughter, who was born last year. Coyote Ridge has given me a wonderful 3 years, and I will miss my students and the supportive community dearly. 

Here is what is in store for our ELD classes this month!

Kindergarten and 1st grade

Kinders and 1st graders have recently finished Unit 6: the language of interpreting and drawing conclusions. Students finished this unit by interpreting information and drawing conclusions from bar graphs that they made from a student survey about favorite subjects and fruit. The last unit of the year is Unit 7: The language of expressing and supporting opinions. In this unit, students will learn that our experiences lead us to have different perspectives, and that expressing our opinion helps us understand ourselves and others better. Students will be able to use modal auxiliary verbs and adverbs in expanded sentences to express their opinion. 

2nd grade 

2nd grade also completed  Unit 6: the language of interpreting and drawing conclusions in April. For our final project, students made different paper airplanes and conducted experiments to collect data about how far different paper airplane fly.  Students then used their data to make graphs and used them to draw conclusions about the different variables that affect flight. We will wrap up the year with Unit 7: The language of expressing and supporting opinions. In this unit, students will learn how to use facts and examples to support their opinions and justify a claim. Students are working towards the learning goal of being able to identify evidence to express their opinion, and use language to elaborate on their reasoning.

3rd and 4th grade

3rd and 4th graders are concluding Unit 6: The language of interpreting and analyzing in the beginning of May. Students are analyzing and engaging in discussions about graphs that relate to the Earth's environment. For the final assessment, students will use subordinating conjunctions, adverbs, and mathematical vocabulary to interpret and draw conclusions about data on graphs. For Unit 7:  The language of arguing and justifying opinions, students will learn that there is argument-specific language used to express and justify an opinion. By the end of the year, students will be able to evaluate claims and evidence by drawing from multiple sources, and organize a claim and use evidence to persuade others.
