Multilingual Newsletter - May 2025
Happy May! I can’t believe that summer is right around the corner. I want to thank all of my multilingual families for their endless support this year. I have loved getting to know all of my students this year and treasure the time we spent learning and growing each day. I also want to express my sincere gratitude for honoring our multilingual program at Coyote Ridge Elementary School where language and cultural background are both valued and respected each and everyday!
In Kindergarten and 1st grade, students will be using the key language use of inform to give an opinion through the language for Social Studies to tell why it is important to eat healthy food.
- By the end of the unit students will be able to apply the targeted functions and selected features within the context of the compelling question.
- Throughout the unit, students will participate in the teaching and learning cycle for the functional approach to language (build background knowledge, supported reading, deconstruct text, joint construction of a text, collaborative construction of a text with peers and independent construction of a text.)
- The food groups dairy, fruits and vegetables, grains, and protein are used as context for academic language learning.
In second grade, students will be using the key language use of inform to give an opinion through the language for Social Studies to tell why it is important to have access to goods from around the world and how this can improve our lives. The following questions will be addressed during this unit:
-Why do people trade goods?
-What are some goods you use on a daily basis that are imported?
-What are some everyday items that you might use that are imported?
-Why might some markets around the world have different types of goods?
Our third grade students will continue to be involved in the process of writing while they finish their weather unit along with developing a multimedia presentation and sharing it with their peers. Third grade students will also continue with another self selected research writing project during the month of May to finish the school year as amazing writers.
In fourth grade, students will also be involved in the process of doing a research project based on a topic. Fourth grade students will be making a multimedia presentation to present to their peers during the month of May.
In 5th grade, our multilingual students will have the opportunity to learn how to protect our natural resources. Wood, minerals and metals, electricity and natural gas, air, and food are used as context for academic language learning.
It has truly been an honor to be your child’s language teacher this year and I will see everyone in the fall. Have a beautiful summer!
