Governor to sign bill funding free full-day kindergarten

Full-Day Kindergarten

The recent passage of House Bill 19-1262 makes it possible to offer full-day kindergarten for all families in the State of Colorado. Governor Jared Polis is set to sign the bill in the coming days.

In Adams 12 Five Star Schools, we strongly believe full-day kindergarten benefits the social and academic development of all our students, and we are excited for the opportunity to provide more families with a full-day kindergarten experience.

Starting in August 2019, the Five Star District will exclusively offer full-day kindergarten - at no cost to families - at all district elementary and K-8 schools. Any previous half-day kindergarten sessions will be expanded to full-day and families will automatically be enrolled at no cost to them.

Background

Since January of this year, when we became aware of the Governor’s desire to fund universal full-day kindergarten, we began working to ensure we met the needs and expectations of our families while also providing the best educational experience for all students.

In April, we surveyed incoming kindergarten families to better understand their interest in a free full-day kindergarten option next year. The feedback indicated that more than 94 percent of incoming kindergarten families would participate in a free full-day kindergarten option if available at all schools.

At the same time, we’ve been preparing to potentially welcome full-day kindergarten at all district elementary and K-8 schools. We’ve established plans to hire additional teachers and support staff, we’ve walked school buildings and made plans for any classroom modifications necessary to accommodate additional students and we’ve allocated additional instructional materials for the new classes.

While the timing of this decision presents unique challenges and opportunities for school districts and families across Colorado, the Five Star District is committed to offering full-day kindergarten for all students at all district elementary and K-8 schools this fall.

We strongly believe full-day kindergarten provides a solid foundation for every student’s educational career, and are excited for the opportunity to further support student success in the Five Star District.
