January Newsletter

Dear Parents and Guardians -

Happy 2020! It is amazing to think that we are starting a new year and a new decade. At Coyote Ridge Elementary we have a lot to celebrate including our recent recognition for being one of the top performing schools in the state of Colorado. We enjoyed visiting with our school superintendent on January 6th as he highlighted this award - known as the John Irwin School of Excellence Award. As always, we appreciate the support and recognition from Mr. Gdowski for the great work taking place at our school.

Rather than resting on our laurels, we continue to look for ways to improve and assure our students are growing and thriving as learners. As a staff, we have spent a considerable amount of time this year focused on literacy and the importance of strong instructional practices to support every student in both reading and writing. Our new approach to reading foundations and the many components involved in the act of reading and making meaning of the written word has been very successful this school year. We will continue to learn and grow as educators in this area to do what is best for kids.

In addition to reading, we have agreed as a staff to have a renewed focus on writing. This focus includes providing additional opportunities for students to write both in class and at home. At school, we have developed posters that will be on display in every classroom with reminders about the key components of grammar and mechanics to be included in every piece of writing. These posters will be grade specific, but will ensure we are more consistent with writing expectations for our students as they progress from grade to grade.

In 3rd-5th grade, we also plan to have one night of writing homework each week with a checklist that outlines the key components of quality writing. One area we know students need more practice in is the act of responding to a prompt. Your child’s teacher will be sharing more information about this weekly activity shortly after we return from break. As always we appreciate your support as we work in collaboration to enrich the learning taking place at our school. We are excited to monitor how additional writing practice at every grade level makes a positive impact on the literacy skills of our students.

Happy New Year
